While over at my parents' house helping them take in deck furniture for the winter, I was reminded of this Times Square piece I made on layers of cut foam core in 1996 - 1997 or thereabouts. Times Square has always made for recurring subject matter in my work and it's the central location of my next book. I think I was supposed to be reminded of the time travel aspect of this work from 30 years ago as the piece shows Times Square signage from multiple decades intersecting in a non-linear fashion. This actually squares with the time travel theme of my next book. I had all but forgotten that I did blend imagery from different decades in the Times Square works I did around this time. I'll take it as a reminder of a theme that isn't so new to me and also a sign that after several months away from working on the project, I should get back to work on coloring those illustrations.
Sketchbook at Steve's watching Rear Window
More creations from the student of mine named Soren.
When not sketching or building model figures, he makes
his own characters out of clay. What a great creator...
A student decided to incorporate the cover art from Radiohead's OK Computer
into one of his drawings without telling me. I was amazed when I saw him
doing this and told him I bought it on day of release at Tower Records on
4th and Broadway in 1997. To think that a kid born in 2010 is so deep into
Radiohead is quite a cool thing. These kids keep surprising me.
