A Staten Island Moment...
I drove by the house my parents and I lived in from 1982 to 1986
while on the way to a birthday party. So many nice memories
on Rice Avenue. Here it is below in an NYC tax photo from 1940...
1975 / 2023 • Lori Jean, Bobby, Joey, Freddy and me.
Some things never change and it’s good to know that some
people don’t either. I love the Kinsella family. These people
have been a constant in my life for the past 50 years and
they are all amazing. Oh and yes, Freddy just happened to
have a Santa hat in his car in August. What are the odds?
BACKSTORY: When my parents brought me home as a baby from the hospital in 1973, it was to an apartment they had just rented on Willowbrook Road. Across the street lived a family with a lot of nice kids who developed a special relationship with my Mom and Dad. Lori Jean babysat me frequently and whenever she did, her brothers often came over to spend time with me as well. There might be one Kinsella in the apartment with me when they left but there could be up to four or more when they returned. My parents NEVER ONCE worried because I was always completely safe. At other times, they brought me to the playground at the school across the street or over to their pool for a swim. I have very vivid, beautiful memories of all of this including Lori Jean coming over to watch Eight Is Enough with my parents and I every Wednesday night. On Saturday mornings, she would come over to dance along to American Bandstand and Soul Train with us in front of the TV. During the now famous NYC Blackout of 1977, some of the Kinsellas came over to sit on the front steps of our apartment building with candles around us. Someone was playing an acoustic guitar but I can’t recall who. The Kinsella kids were always “big kids” and I had to obey them, but they were very cool. Whenever they were around me, everything was a lot of fun and no matter what we were doing, I knew I was safe. There is no amount of money that can buy great neighbors like that. Relationships like these are priceless. HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY LORI JEAN!
