Ads and articles from a 1944 copy of Movie Life magazine.
This beautiful time capsule of American celebrity culture references (among others) Ida Lupino, Peter Coe, Betty Hutton, Gene Kelly, Paul Bracken. The advertising is brilliantly targeted "plain folk" who want to achieve the seemingly unattainable beauty that the Hollywood of the 1940s represented in many of its films. Within seven years our cover star (Ms. Lucille Ball) would be a much greater star on that newfangled in-home contraption known as the television. On the smaller screen she would eclipse her sometimes shaky status on the big one more than a thousand times over.
